ACUPUNCTURE
Acupuncture is the primary treatment in oriental medicine. The Chinese have used it for preventative treatments and treating disorders for more than five thousand years. Acupuncture is a broad term covering techniques for inserting and manipulating thin needles into "acupuncture points" on the body in order to restore health and well-being. In the West, it is associated with Traditional Chinese medicine, or TCM along with herbal medicine and tui na. Other types of acupuncture, notably Japanese, Korean, and classical Chinese acupuncture, are practiced and taught throughout the world.
In 1997, the National Institute of Health issued a consensus statement on acupuncture that concluded that:
- "there is sufficient evidence of acupuncture's value to expand its use into conventional medicine and to encourage further studies of its physiology and clinical value."
